Facebook Used as Tool to Con Grandparents

no_scam1

I ran across this article today from Facecrooks and I wanted to share it with my readers.  About a month ago, I heard of this same scam.  I guess it is still happening so I wanted to make sure I made you aware of it.  Apparently scammers are using social media to find out information about grandparents and then using that information to con them.  The case I heard about is mentioned in this article.  A grandmother by the name of Ruth Winter received a call from a con artist stating that her grandson was in jail and she needed to pay the bond money to get him out.  Ms. Winter is quoted as saying “And instead of thinking, my grandma emotion overcame me.”  She sent them the money per their request.  Many of these scam artists are located overseas making it almost impossible to find and prosecute them.

Just a Couple of Things to Keep Your Facebook Account Safe

Facebook

In the past few weeks myself and many people I know have had issues with their Facebook accounts.  My sister seemed to start the first of trend of hacked accounts last week.  I was a victim also.  Many times when a hacker is successful on one person’s account, they will move on to that person’s friends.  As of right now, my sister still does not have control over her account and it has really been a big hassle.  One reason why it was not that much of a hassle for me is, I caught it early with my mobile notifications.  I am amazed as to how many people do not have this feature enabled on Facebook.  It is very easy and could possibly save you from losing your account to a hackers.

First, In the upper right hand corner of your Facebook account, go to your account settings.

How to Block Game Requests on Facebook

Overcome Your Fears

I do not think there are many days that go by and I do not see a post from one of my 1500 Facebook friends threatening to delete people who send them requests to play certain games.  For most of us, you are either a Facebook gamer or you are not.  For those of us who are not, it does get a little aggravating to see notifications from Farmville, Cityville and all the numerous casinos games, just to name a few.  Instead of ranting, raving and getting all annoyed with the numerous requests, there is an easier way to try and solve the problem by blocking game app requests from certain games and/or certain individuals.

First, there are two places that you can see what game app requests have been sent to you other than your notifications.  Normally those two places are in your bottom left sidebar and your top right as seen in the image.

“Overcome Your Fears” – Facebook Privacy

Facebook

So, as promised in my first “Overcome Your Fears” post, I am going to start to try and give my readers some guidance on how to feel more comfortable on social media and networking sites.  It is probably no surprise to anyone that Facebook is the most popular right now with 750 million users and it is also my favorite.  Millions of people are using Facebook to connect with friends and family, reconnect with old old friends and building positive business relationships.

It is very easy to get started on Facebook.  You just have to create a profile and you are all ready to go. Many people however, are hesitant to do so because they feel like they are sharing too much information about themselves on the social network. The first thing I will say to that is, if there is something that you do not want everyone to know, don’t put that information on there.  It is really that simple.  If you are like me though, there are many things that I do not mind sharing but only want to share them with certain people.   That is where your privacy settings come in.  By default, your settings are set to what Facebook recommends.  However, you can change those settings to what you want them to be to make you most comfortable being on the network.  To make it a little easier for you, I put together this short video to show you how to do just that. » Read more..
