“Real Life Spotlight” – Kevin Bennett

The first of my “Real Life Spotlight” series involves an interview with a man that has not quite entered into the 40 and over club yet.  39 year old Kevin Bennett is the owner of KBenn Merchandises.  My first interaction with Kevin happened when he thanked me for liking his Facebook page.  As many pages that I have liked on Facebook, (well beyond the so called “500 limit”) I can not remember anyone ever thanking me for a like.  From that point on, I knew that Kevin was a person that I wanted to know.

When I asked Kevin to be a part of this new blog series that I am writing, there was no hesitation.  Having never meeting him in person and living in different areas, I did not know exactly how to get this done.  I was so excited to move forward with the process however, I came up with a questionnaire for him to respond to.  To my surprise, he completed it very quickly and with much enthusiasm.  This told me a great deal about my new found Facebook friend.  That along with the answers to the questions I had for Kevin should tell you a lot about him and the type of person he is too.

I started by asking Kevin to tell me a little bit about himself.

“My name is Kevin Bennett, and I’m 39 years old. I was born and raised in Bonneau Beach, SC, and I lived in Bonneau Beach, SC until I was 18 years old. At age 18, I went to college to play basketball at The University of South Carolina at Spartanburg (Now USC-Upstate). I studied business management and completed college at The University of South Carolina in Columbia. I’m single. I have one brother that’s one year younger than me, and I have four sisters (two older and two younger). I love traveling, playing sports, watching and attending sporting events, concerts, comedy shows, entertaining family and friends, going on cruises, meeting new people, trying and learning new things, reading, educating myself on a wide variety of topics, listening to music, watching movies (theater and home), watching a wide variety of TV programming, networking, motivating and inspiring others, running my business, helping others in anyway I can and living life. ”

How do you feel about turning 40 soon?

“I feel great about turning 40 on August 12, 2012. I look forward to it. If I live to see it, I’ll feel blessed to have lived 40 years on earth. A lot of people have said they were getting depressed when they were reaching 40. I thank GOD for life and every second that I breathe. More importantly, I thank GOD for all that I’ve learned throughout my years of living. I thank GOD for the wisdom I’ve gained in my 39 years of living. Turning 40 would be a blessing. I’ve had many family, friends and associates who didn’t live to see 20, 25, 30 or 35. I’m looking forward to 40.”

Woman on the computer

It’s a New Technology World!

If you are anything like me, you did not even start working on a computer until college or even on one of your first few jobs.  As a child, I was so excited when we got an Atari for Christmas one year.  I vividly remember the game with the dot and two dashes, one on both sides.  I spent hours with my friends bouncing that dot back and forth!  Even when I got a little older and bought one of my first digital canon cameras, I thought I was really jumping into this new world of technology! Although I still love using a digital camera, this world of technology is now a whole new place! » Read more..

Deciding To Make Healthier Choices

I am normally pretty conscious about my appearance.  I do try to work out and have recently become addicted to Zumba.  Even with the exercise, I am not reaching the goals where I want to be.  I think a lot of it has to do with my diet. I normally eat what I want to eat and then just try to work it off.  One of the major things that I feel like I can not live without is my daily diet soda. On a bad day or on a day that I feel like I need a little more energy, I will have more than one.  Since I know many people that drink soda all day, I did not think my one to two a day addiction was that bad.  But, after a friend of mine that works with the health department started to tell me all of the negative effects of drinking sodas, I started to think about it a little differently.  ”You need to drink WATER,” she said.  I do drink a little water daily but I know it is not enough.  What she said did not immediately make me stop drinking sodas either. But recently I ran across a local non-profit that I follow on Twitter that is challenging everyone to drink more water.  This is the perfect opportunity for me to try and drink more water and less sodas!  After they asked me if I was in on their challenge the other day, I decided to sign up. » Read more..

As I Get Older

I use social media, Facebook in particular, to connect with friends and network for business reasons so I hardly play any of the games or post anything too crazy in my status updates.  All of the messages you see that say copy and re-post if you agree sometime annoy me.  But the other day, I ran across one that made me stop and think for a second and I actually reposted it.  Here is what it said:

An old man once said, “There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad, and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”~Re-post if you agree”

I reposted it because I actually did agree with this.  This is exactly one of the things that I spoke about in my first post “Oh Lordy, Look who’s Forty” about things just changing or needing to change once I reached forty.  After having many loved ones pass away, I realized that being happy is more important to me than the trivial drama that people tend to bring to your lives at times.

Oh Lordy! Look Who’s Forty!

40 shirt

I think I was going through a state of depression when I turned thirty.  At 29 I broke off my engagement of one year of a boyfriend I had been dating for four and found myself a single mother of a newborn baby.  All I kept thinking was, “I am not 20 anything anymore and on top of it all, I am someone’s mother!”  This was never the life I had dreamed of myself on my 30th birthday, which occurred 2 months after my son was born. After many nights of crying and consistently having wine on hand for emergencies, I decided to get up and get on with my life.  By all means, this little life now depends on me and to quote Whitney Houston from Waiting to Exhale, “I still look good!”
